Late Sunday night, I was relaxing in my dorm watching SportsCenter until the scrolling bottom line almost gave me a coronary. The bottom line illuminated "Jets acquire WR Santonio Holmes for 5th Round Pick." In my usual sleepy stupor at that time, I thought my eyes had deceived me. I checked ESPN.com and sadly saw that in fact they did not.
Yes it is true the Jets are making huge moves that should catapult them far into the playoffs once again. I'm not going to lie, I'm upset that all we have done is sign Karlos Dansby up to this point and that we are reluctant to even talk to Jason Taylor as he receives the 5 star treatment in his visit at New York. Yes, this is upsetting but you have to understand Parcells and Co. just don't work that way. I had to finally accept that fact after this particular move last night. Trust me I love signing big names and telling everybody about them and having ESPN actually mention the word Dolphins. Unfortunately, we aren't going to be the "sexy" team who makes risky moves like the Jets, what we are going to do is build a strong team to be a contender for many years to come, much like the New England Patriots.
I have completely given up any hope for us maybe drafting Dez Bryant or perhaps trading for Brandon Marshall. This would make sense to develop Chad Henne, who has stated himself that he needs help and would want a big physical target. However, the Dolphins are looking to address WR in the 2nd round.
The bottom line is, you don't sustain winning seasons by FA moves, you build through the draft, no it isn't flashy but who knows if the moves by the Jets will even pan out? Washington Redskins ring a bell? LT is old, Cromartie can't tackle, and Santonio is suspended for the first 4 games of the season. Parcells is old school and stubborn, but simply put, his formula works. Whether or not the game has passed him by, will be determined by seeing how the next two drafts pan out. Building through the draft is what the Pats, Colts, Saints, and Steelers have done, that is why they are very successful franchises. That is how you build a contender and that is why we have been bad for so long, BAD DRAFTING by previous regimes.
Draft day can prove to be very interesting, with the obvious defensive choice in the first round, it will be fun to see which WR ends up in a Dolphins uniform: Golden Tate or Arrelious Benn. The way the Jets are "building" will catch the headlines, but the way the Dolphins are building will insure long term stability and winning.
